Herd Living
Horses are naturally social, prey animals that rely on herd structures for their overall well-being. Living within a herd provides emotional security, supports mental health, and enhances physical safety. In both wild and domestic environments, these groups—often guided by a dominant mare and protected by a stallion—offer companionship, opportunities for mutual grooming that help reduce stress, and shared vigilance against potential threats.
At Evee Acres, we provide a safe and supportive setting where new horses can gradually find their place within the herd. Most of the horses here are retired for various reasons and have been entrusted to us by owners who want them to live in a more natural, herd-based environment. While the horses benefit from consistent daily care, regular feeding schedules, access to stalls, and veterinary care when needed, they also enjoy the unique opportunity to roam together as a herd across more than 70 acres.
Living as a herd allows the horses to form strong bonds, watch out for one another, and engage in natural behaviors that support their well-being. In many cases, this environment even allows some horses to reduce or discontinue costly prescription medications as their stress levels decrease, they exercise naturally and regularly and their overall health improves.
At Evee Acres, boarders often remark on how content their horses appear—enjoying a level of freedom and social connection that many traditional boarding settings cannot provide.
